Southwood Psychiatric Hospital is a mental health facility with over 30 years of experience, treating adolescents and young adults struggling with mental health concerns. They also treat a variety of co-occurring or developmental problems that may be contributing to the mental health condition.
Their approach to care begins with a thorough admissions process to determine which program and therapy works best for the individual. Southwood understands that choosing treatment for your child can be a challenging process. To help ease the transition, an admission specialist is available to go through each program in detail. Southwood Psychiatric offers evidence-based treatment methods which include individual and group therapy, and experiential therapies such as yoga, music and art. In addition to treatment, patients partake in numerous outdoor activities.Throughout the course of therapy, Southwood keeps families connected, informed, and actively involved. Families can engage in their child’s care in a variety of ways, with family therapy sessions and family outings.
Southwood’s highest level of care is their inpatient program. This program addresses mental health disorders in children ages 4-18 of any gender with the goal of achieving emotional stability. This acute level of care is typically a short hospital stay providing round-the-clock medical care and intensive therapeutic interventions. The IDD (intellectual developmental disability) and ASD (autism spectrum disorder) program is designed to meet the individualized needs of those with developmental disabilities. This program targets males between 6-21 years old and can provide treatment for up to 44 people with a staff-to-child ratio of 1:4. Southwood uses a collaborative interdisciplinary approach that follows CASSP (Child and Adolescent Service System Program) principles. The foundation of this method incorporates family-centered services. Southwood Hospital’s final treatment program is known as the CHOICES 5 treatment program. Here, men between the ages of 10-21 can receive treatment for acute mental health concerns and sexual addiction using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The 32 bed facility is located outside of Southwood Psychiatric Hospital and the youth accepted generally struggle with intellectual disabilities that are mild to moderate.
Southwood also offers stabilization services for families who may experience a crisis with at-risk youth, providing 24/7 on-call support with a therapist. This service offers ongoing treatment and family support and can address substance misuse as a co-occurring condition.
